Nearly a media Blackout of the Other Major California Fire
The lithium battery fire at the Vistra power plant in Moss Landing, Monterey County, California may be the largest ever battery fire anywhere in the world. Lithium fires burn at 2000 F and cannot be easily put out. Lithium does not burn through combustion, as carbon-containing fuels do. Trying to douse them with water only exacerbates the fire and can lead to explosions. And the lithium salts in the batteries are self-oxidizing, which makes them prone to reignite. Lithium fires can produce a variety of toxic gasses, such as Hydrofluoric acid, Hydrogen cyanide, Hydrogen chloride, and Sulfur dioxide.
Residents living as far as 20 miles away have been experiencing metallic tastes in their mouths, burning eyes, burning throats, and yellow residues all over their things. The fire’s been going for six days and only now has Governor Newsom decided to launch an investigation. This was the fourth fire at the site since 2019.
