Aviation taxes raise a more general question that applies to all tax policies geared towards climate change, are we trying to raise tax revenue or curtail emissions?

The answer determines what a successful outcome looks like. If the former, then we need to focus on where the revenue is being spent and how well that is working.

If the latter, we should be concerned every year the amount raised goes up -- because it corresponds to an increase in emissions.

In this week's column I ball my hands up into little fists and throw a fit about the current state of sales tax compliance.

Seriously though, its a mess.

"A recent proposal asking Congress to set uniform state sales tax policies has sparked controversy, but it gets more right than wrong. With more than 13,000 sales tax jurisdictions in the US, small businesses face huge compliance challenges that fuel an industry around sales tax calculation.”

@Cyber_Unicorn @hacks4pancakes @metacurity It is not that easy. Macy's (US) turned me down (some years ago). When I moved to Canada, everybody turned me down, except for "secured" credit cards.

You give the bank $500, and they allow you to use $300 of that. For a year or so. I was not allowed to give them $5000 so I could spend $3000. Useless, can't even book a flight or a hotel.

I spoke to a bank employee who was selling credit cards for 3 years, but she could not get one herself.
